WorldMenstrual Hygiene Day and Martial Arts Open School Assessment May 28th, 2024

The Menstrual Hygiene Day event held at Bola Ige Millennium Secondary School, Tolu Complex,
Ajegunle, Lagos aimed to educate and empower girls on menstrual hygiene practices, breaking
taboos, and promoting a period-friendly world as well as assessing the impact of a 2-month martial
arts training which the girls received from June to August 2023 in partnership with UNESCO-ICM.
The event took place in the school hall and featured engaging decorations, informative posters, a
practical session on how to create reusable pads, a Q&A session and interactive sessions on martial
arts and menstrual hygiene.
A practical session was held with the girls on how to create reusable pads and the girls showed
active participation. Despite initial cultural barriers, the event successfully addressed taboos
through open dialogue, peer support, and tailored menstrual hygiene products. Participants
expressed gratitude for the event, highlighting the value of the information shared and the impact
on their menstrual health practices. Each participant received packs of disposable sanitary pads
and they all received reskilling on martial arts practical to mark the end of the program
